Hazel Aydelette Obituary

Hazel Ann Burleson Aydelette

April 9, 1929 - October 24, 2026

Hazel Ann Burleson Aydelette went to be with her heavenly Father on October 24, 2026. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Bernard Fields Aydelette; her parents Steve & Myrtle Burleson as well as brothers Carl Burleson, Phillip Burleson, and Danny Burleson. She leaves behind three children Rodger, Debbie (Howard) and Clint (Linda) all from Greensboro, NC. She also leaves behind seven grand-children; Kristin (Robert), Karmin (Seth), Amanda (Lance), Karin (Wade), Erin (Travis), Adam and Rodger II and eleven Great-grandchildren: Jack, Finn, Sam, Colt, Abel, Beau, Amelia, Maisie, Windsor, Miller, and Pacey.

Hazel was born on April 9, 1929 in Spruce Pine, NC. She graduated from Harris High School in Mitchell County and attended Women's College now UNC-G. She met the love of her life, Bernard, while in college at a dance on campus. After a short courtship they were married April 22, 1950. They began a family in 1951 with Rodger, then Debbie and Clint. Hazel thrived as a full time mother. When her children were older, she began working as secretary/treasurer for the family business, West End Ice Cream Co., which later became Yum Yum Better Ice Cream Co and did so for almost 50 years.

One word that encompassed Hazel's personality is LOVE. When she hugged you, that hug would make you instantly feel better. Hazel's happy nature and jovial spirit could sweep you up no matter what kind of day you were having. Her laugh was the most contagious of any you have heard, so if she laughed, YOU laughed and it could diffuse any difficult situation. She was a peacemaker to the core.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2026 at 11:00 am in the sanctuary of Alamance Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 am prior to the funeral. Hazel will be laid to rest in the Alamance Church Cemetery along with her beloved husband's ashes after the funeral in a private graveside service.

The Aydelette family would like to thank Clapp's Nursing Center for their compassionate care for the last six and a half years of Hazel's life.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to any fund at Alamance Presbyterian Church, 4000 Presbyterian Road, Greensboro, NC 27406 or AuthoraCare Hospice & Palliative Care, 2504 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27409.

Yesterday

Dear Debbie, Rodger, Clint,
Just before I got the call from Zack (Jeff´s son), I was explaining to my husband the slaw on "the" hot dog and how he´d need 2 "all the way." At that time my thoughts went to Hazel and how she might be doing. She was always so warm and kind to this awkward cousin who was always underfoot. Then my phone rang. I know she is sharing her big laugh and wonderful smile with all the family who had already left us, and you will miss her terribly. All my condolences go out to you and your families. Enjoy your memories.
Love, Lea

I met Hazel one year when the choir went caroling. I came home from Colorado to North Carolina for Christmas and was invited to go along. I remember Hazel was on the bus that night. Our last stop was Yum Yum for ice cream. Some years later I moved back to North Carolina for good and joined the choir. One evening when Hazel came in for choir practice she was hot about the news that Yum Yum did not get the award for best ice cream, even though they did take best hot dog. At that point I had not connected the name Aydelette with Yum Yum; I just thought maybe Hazel worked there. I miss singing with Hazel; I hope she is in a bigger choir now.
