GREENSBORO DON CORBETT, ONE OF NORTH CAROLINA A&T State University's most successful basketball coaches in the school's history, died on Wednesday of complications from cancer. He was 75 years old. Corbett was born in Columbus, GA, but was raised in Thomasville, GA, where he was a two-sport high school standout in football and basketball. After receiving a bachelor's degree from Lincoln (MO) University and a master's degree from the University of Illinois, he began his coaching career at Carver High School in Columbus, GA, where he compiled a 33-13 record. After two assistant coaching stints at South Carolina State University and Tennessee State University, Corbett got his first collegiate head coaching job at Lincoln, his alma mater, in 1971. He coached at Lincoln for eight years, where his teams finished either first or second in the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) every year and his 1977-78 team made the Elite Eight of the Division II NCAA Basketball Tournament. He compiled a 159-59 record at Lincoln, and is still the school's all-time winningest basketball coach. Corbett came to A&T in 1979, where he coached until 1993. During his tenure, the Aggies either won or shared the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) regular-season championship nine times. From 1981-1988, A&T captured the MEAC Tournament seven consecutive times, a feat matched in Division I basketball only by the University of Kentucky. Corbett led the Aggies to the NCAA Basketball Tournament for the first time. A&T made seven total trips to the NCAAs under his leadership, and Corbett was named the league's Coach of the Year six times. A&T also appeared in the National Invitation Tournament during his tenure. He retired from coaching in 1993 with 256 career wins at A&T and 415 victories overall. The University named the basketball court for Corbett and Coach Cal Irvin in 2006. Corbett's teams only had three losing seasons in his 24-year head coaching career. He is a member of the MEAC Hall of Fame, the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame, the MIAA Hall of Fame, and the Lincoln University Hall of Fame. Corbett met and married his beloved wife Freda while they were undergraduate students at Lincoln. They were married for 44 years before her passing in 2009. He is survived by four children: Don Corbett of Raleigh, Derrick Corbett of Philadelphia, PA, Darren Corbett of Greensboro, and Denise Corbett of Durham; his sister, Gail Garfield of Manhattan, NY, two daughters-in-law, Wendy Gates Corbett of Raleigh and Ana Matore Corbett of Greensboro; and two grandchildren, Jalen Michael Corbett and Cameron Matthew Corbett, both of Greensboro. Woodard Funeral Home is handling the service arrangements for the family.
