GREENSBORO Jim Winstead, 92 years of age, died peacefully at his home in Greensboro on September 14, 2018. He was surrounded by loving family and caregivers during his last days of life. Jim was born in Roxboro, NC on November 1, 1925, where he was raised, along with his five siblings. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Clifton Clement and Rosa Newell Winstead and by his siblings: C.C. (Bubba) Winstead, Frances (Ladybug) Winstead, Ethel Beckham, William Jordan (Bill Joe) Winstead, and Robert Alexander (Skip) Winstead. Jim is survived by his wife Sandra and his children, Dawn and Bill Lowry (grandchildren: Rose and James) of NJ, Victoria Winstead (grandchildren: Hayes and Hailey) of Greensboro, NC, and Sam and wife Amy (grandchild: Rhiannon) of Swansboro, NC. Jim graduated from Roxboro High School, class of 1943. He then entered Mars Hill College and completed one semester prior to being drafted into the US Army in 1944, where he saw action on the European front. Jim was in the 69th Infantry Division, the first to meet the Russians in April 1945. This division, known as the Liberating Unit, uncovered Leipzig-Thekla, a sub-camp of the Buchenwald concentration camp on April 19, 1945. Upon his discharge from the Army, Jim attended UNC-CH, where he majored in American history and was a member of the UNC tennis team. After completing school, Jim found employment in Georgia with the Savannah River Project. While there, Jim entered the Augusta Open, winning it as an unseeded player three years in a row. Jim met and married the love of his life, Sandra Jarrett, in Roxboro in February of 1960 midst a blizzard at Long Memorial Methodist Church. They moved to Greensboro, NC, where they raised their children. Jim was employed by the Greensboro Country Club as the tennis pro, where he worked for 27 years, sharing his love for tennis with young and old. Jim and Sandy were longtime members of their church family at West Market Street United Methodist Church (WMSUMC). There will be a celebration of life on Sunday, September 30 at 3 p.m. at West Market Street United Methodist Church in Greensboro. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to WMSUMC or Hospice & Palliative Care of Greensboro.

Without question, the first time I held a tennis racket, I was staring across the net at Jim Winstead. And I don’t think I would still own a few rackets, and play the game, without those first lessons. He had that affect on his students. His joy and enthusiasm planted the seeds that stayed with us.

I don’t recall seeing him compete, not formally, just a game or two, with other accomplished GCC members - Jack Warmath comes to mind, and Carlton Harris. I didn’t love the game because of the way he played. I loved the game because of the way he taught. No one had more patience; no one was ever quicker to laugh. He loved the game, and so I loved the game.

I can barely recall the last time I saw him at GCC. He must have been 70 by then. He was lithe, and still had a bounce in his step. He was on the court, close to the parking lot, opposite the ballroom. He was sweeping the court, dragging one of those two handled brooms behind him. I don’t recall who saw who first, but he met me at the gate of the chain link fence, we shook hands and spoke for a moment. It was the last time I got to hear that booming, bountiful laugh.

Like so many in Greensboro, I came to know Jim through tennis - in my case, he was my boss when I worked for him at GCC while in high school some 35+ years ago. Besides being so kind and seemingly always in a joyful mood with his big laugh, I also have never forgotten how curious and well-read he was. My recollection is that he was not only a history buff, but also a lover of science and astronomy. The other thing that stood out for me was his love and devotion to his family.

So besides being a great ambassador for the game in tennis, Jim was this unique blend of kindness, humor, enthusiasm, boundless curiosity, faith and dedication to family. That is one rich life, and I feel so privileged to have known him. My blessings and prayers for comfort go out to the Winstead family. He truly was one of a kind!
