From the editor: In praise of large crowds, especially when everybody's a winner

Today I would like to sing the praises of large crowds, especially when somebody's singing and playing music for them.

When thousands of people are together enjoying themselves, it's a sign that everything's all right.

I had this thought on Friday night, when Bess and I showed up at the NC Folk Fest in downtown Greensboro, just in time to see St. Paul & the Broken Bones take the stage under the large City Stage tent.

Because we arrived right at showtime, we were not actually inside the tent, which had been packed for quite some time with thousands of people. We were standing on a blocked-off street with thousands of other people. Looking into the tent, we could only glimpse the gold lamé smock of singer Paul Janeway, which flashed in the swirling light. Outside, we could track the on-stage action in better detail as it was projected onto a giant screen in the street.

People are also reading…

Inside the tent, folks were arranged in neat rows and limited to sitting and standing and swaying together, but outside, the crowd was moving, often to and from the direction of the bar tents, and dancing, often freely and weirdly. And that's fun, because it's fun to watch other people having fun, especially when they don't care what other people think.

And that's when I thought about how we'd just observed 9/11 last week and remembered how quiet everything got back then.

Bess and I had been at the beach with our family on that fateful day. None of our children were of school age then, which explains why we were at the beach in September. It was already quiet out there on the beach anyway, which wasn't a bad thing, but then somebody went inside to make a sandwich and realized that America had been attacked.

At that point, things seemed quieter than ever, and lonely. While we sipped our drinks and boiled our shrimp, the adults talked in hushed tones so as not to scare the children. We finished the four remaining days of our vacation and then drove home on a Saturday, through Southern towns that should have been packed with crazed football fans. All the games had been postponed.

It was an eerie kind of quiet. For a while afterward, people were wary of being together in groups, where perhaps they could be targeted.

We've experienced other periods of heavy silence, most notably during the Covid-19 pandemic, when people were suddenly forbidden to be together groups, lest they got sick and died.

And when they were together, they were required or strongly encouraged to wear masks, and you're not really fully with somebody if you can't see their full facial expressions – though the eyes alone do tell a lot.

Weather, too, would later isolate us, with Hurricane Helene separating whole communities from civilization, and most recently, the snow storms of last winter keeping us off the roads and in our homes.

I don't know about you, but I like being alone and quiet when I want to be alone and quiet – but not when I'm forced by someone or something else.

That's why it was so nice to be downtown on a Friday night listening to music being expertly – and loudly – played and thousands of people being expertly entertained.

In addition to Janeway, St. Paul & the Broken Bones features a seven-man band, with each one possessing the chops to take over the show by himself and often doing so.

Everyone seemed to be having a great time, and then Janeway and the band began to push the boundaries of absurdity, as when the baritone sax roamed the stage playing a whacky solo and then later when the drummer led the crowd in a clapping exercise that he layered on top of a drum solo.

At one point, when the band was punctuating a song with a series of dramatic beats, going from three beats to four beats to nine beats and 13 beats, Janeway cried, "We didn't come here to be good, we came here to be great."

Then he paused and said, "And being great means using fractions."

And then he ordered the band to give him five and a half beats, and they did, with the half beat being some sort of rimshot, I think.

And then he ordered 19 and a half beats, and so on.

And the crowd howled and hoped it would last for ever.

On the second and final encore, Janeway waded out into the crowd while he was singing and climbed a ladder under the disco ball in the middle of the tent and finished the show from there.

A great time was had by all.

Part of me wanted to compare it to a football game, where thousands of people show up in one place. But those folks are divided, wearing different colors and rooting for different teams. Some of them will go home euphoric, and others will go home crushed.

Not so on Friday night at the NC Folk Fest.

Here, everybody was a winner.
