How good are you at answering icebreaker questions?

You know, those questions posed to individuals in a group so that everybody can get better acquainted with each other. Sometimes the group splits into twos or threes to share their answers, but usually you go around the circle or the room or the table and everybody answers one at a time.

Often, the answers of the people in front of you are so much better than the one you've got in your head, so when you hear theirs you're trying to come up with something better and then it's your turn and you blurt out something and it's worse than the first thing you thought of.

Or I blurt out something. I'll speak for myself.

A common icebreaker is favorite movie. I've got about 50 favorite movies. Sometimes I'll go with "Rear Window." Or "Chariots of Fire." Or "Spinal Tap."

The last time I was asked this question, I went with "Heat," the cop-and-bank-robber flick with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, where De Niro, the likeable bad guy, says, "Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner."

Bess was in a group recently where everybody went around and answered the question, "What's something simple that makes you really happy?" One person said a bowl of fresh-cut fruit made him really happy.

For Bess, it was the group text that we have with our four kids. I would have to agree.

The joys of the family group text

A couple of weeks ago, Bess was working at the furniture market in High Point and texted everybody a video of workers hoisting a massive steel sculpture of a swordfish above a doorway.

I wanted to know how much it cost.

Our two oldest sons had different thoughts.

"I hope they talked with a structural engineer," said Robert, our oldest son who works in construction in New York City. This got a "Ha Ha" emoji.

It also got the attention of our second-oldest son, Will, an insurance underwriter in California.

"Yeah guy in the blue does not appear to be too concerned with OSHA compliance," he wrote. "This one is an overlapping concern for me and Robert. Fortunately for me, this would be a workers comp issue not true liability."

Then he added: "The fish looks cool at least."

"It's reassuring to hear you know your business," their mother said. "And yes the fish is very cool!"

Robert was not ready to talk aesthetics. "I would say they should probably be wearing some form of PPE," he wrote, "but other than that they're good."

That's Personal Protective Equipment. I had to look it up.

Robert added this: "An old safety guy I worked with used to say "if you can't be safe, be careful" and they're definitely following the latter."

Missing from this discussion was our oldest, Cary, a first grade teacher in Chapel Hill, and our youngest, Joe, a social worker, bartender and musician in Athens, Georgia. About that time, Cary probably had her hands full with 6-year-olds, and who knows what Joe was up to.

But Joe popped up in the group text three days later during the second quarter of the Georgia-Auburn football game. All of our children are graduates of the University of Georgia, which last week was ranked No. 1 in the nation and a huge favorite to beat Auburn.

"Anybody else getting nervous?" Joe asked.

His sister joined the discussion. "I made the mistake of not prioritizing watching the game today thinking "Oh it's Auburn," she wrote. "Regretting that now."

The Bulldogs lost to Auburn in a shocker. Following the string of texts, I was struck at how seldom my children are nervous watching their team, because their team rarely loses or is even trailing in a game. For me and most college football fans here in North Carolina, we're always nervous watching our teams and we feel irrational joy when we beat anybody.

Anyway, I learn something from every new family text chain. In that way, it's kind of like an icebreaker.

My kind of icebreaker

I've been writing this column for about three years now, after I'd lived here for a year. It was at the suggestion of Bess and a reader named Gertrude Beal.

Frankly, this is my kind of icebreaker. It's been easier to break the ice with you 500-750 words at a time, week after week. And it hasn't been a one-way street. When I share a story or bit of family information here, many of you call or email with a story or tidbit of your own, often pointing out something we have in common.

These calls and emails are wonderful surprises that brighten my Sunday.
