Community members and students at UNC Chapel Hill protest campus buildings named for slave owners and avowed white supremacists.

The UNCG board of trustees, following the recommendation of a panel it appointed to examine the legacy of Charles B. Aycock, voted 9-2 in February 2016 to take his name off the school’s 89-year-old auditorium. The auditorium opened in 1927 and was named a year later for Aycock, who served as North Carolina governor from 1901 to 1905. Aycock, lauded for his stance on education at the time, was also a major architect of a white supremacy campaign in the late 19th century.
