The Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers face off in the second round of the NHL playoffs. The league’s postseason format means that these two teams, both who finished in the top three of the NHL standings, will face off in just the second round.
These two Eastern Conference powerhouses are both at the top of the odds board to win the Stanley Cup.

Rangers vs. Hurricanes odds, preview and picks for Eastern Conference Semifinals
These are two of the NHL’s best teams and they proved that in the first round. The Rangers, fresh off winning the Presidents’ Trophy as the league’s best regular season team, made quick work of the Washington Capitals in the first round.
They used their strengths, goaltending, finishing and an elite power play, to finish off the lowly Capitals in just four games. New York will not have things as easy when they come up against the Hurricanes.
The Canes have looked like a new team since acquiring Jake Guentzel at the trade deadline. They faced a slightly tougher first round opponent in the New York Islanders but ended up winning the series in five games. Carolina will look to dispatch another New York team but face a much more difficult challenge.

Rangers vs. Hurricanes series pick: Hurricanes (-150 or better)
While this series is expected to be very close, we like the Hurricanes to bring it home, likely in six or seven games. This Carolina team is super deep and ranks near the top of the NHL in advanced stats like expected goals and Corsi. They dominate the flow of the game and regularly control the possession metrics.
The Rangers on the other hand rely more on their elite goaltender and scorching hot power play. However, those factors are slightly less predictable game-to-game and could let the Rangers down in this series.
The development of young players like Seth Jarvis, Martin Necas and Jack Drury has helped give the Hurricanes new life. They have a deep forward group with players on every line who can score.
In the past, the Hurricanes were taken down because they lacked high-end talent. The addition of Guentzel and the ascent of players like Jarvis and Necas has helped in that regard.
Rangers vs. Hurricanes series props: Hurricanes Lose Game 1 + Series Win (+325 or better)
If you’re a believer in the Hurricanes, picking them to lose Game 1 but win the series will get you better odds. They will be on the road for Game 1 and that is a tough environment in the playoffs.
However, we believe they still have the more complete team and should win the series.
Carolina Hurricanes Stanley Cup Odds
The Carolina Hurricanes are the current favorites to win the Stanley Cup. The Rangers will be one of the toughest opponents they face, so if they can get through this round, they will have a great chance to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.
The return is nothing excellent at 4-1 at this point but still offers a chance to quadruple your money if you think that the Hurricanes have what it takes to go all the way. With a strong defensive core, a deep forward group, and really solid goaltending, the Canes are equipped to make a deep run.
