HSXTRA.COM: CATCHING UP WITH BASEBALL

OTHER TEAMS TO WATCH

Northern Guilford: With Division I signees Cameron Cotter (N.C. State), John Clark Ouzts (Charlotte) and Josh Pike (N.C. State), Coach Landon Kimrey has one of the deepest and most talented pitching staffs in the state and a catcher (Guilford commit Logan King) who has handled them for four years. If Pike, SS J.T. Jarrett (N.C. State) and CF Bryant Carrey can help the Nighthawks score some runs, a deep, senior-laden team could go far in the Class 3-A playoffs.

Rockingham County: Senior left-hander Angel Zarate, who signed with North Carolina, is averaging nearly two strikeouts per inning and is also a dangerous hitter for the Mid-State 3-A Conference contenders. Coby Ingle has been strong at the plate and on the mound and might be the area’s top freshman. The Cougars’ problem is they are in Northern Guilford’s conference.

Southeast Guilford: Falcons coach Dave Beasley can throw Jaylen Guy (N.C. Central), Chris Scheibly, Thorn Alley or Ryan Douglas and feel confident, especially with returning HSXtra.com All-Area player Devin Bartley behind the plate. The key for Southeast will be getting more production from the hitters as the weather warms. Jaylen and OF Justin Guy have been solid, and senior Noah Marley is driving the ball from the No. 3 spot. If Douglas and Jax Hackett can get hot, too, the Falcons are equipped for a postseason run.

Southwest Guilford: RHP Kyle Blendinger, a North Carolina signee, made the last 40 for the USA Baseball 18U team, and he was the HSXtra.com Player of the Year as a junior. But Coach Reid Holmes’ Cowboys are much more. Jacob Edwards, the No. 2 starter as well as an outstanding hitter and outfielder, and IF Garrison Thornton are part of a strong junior class. The Cowboys are hoping sophomore SS Tom Grose can recover from a broken glove hand before the playoffs.

OTHER PLAYERS TO WATCH

P-IF Brody Lawson, senior, High Point Christian: The UNC-Wilmington signee will have to carry a Cougars team that lost significant talent to graduation, but he’s capable of doing just that for Coach Corey Gesell.

OF Kier Meredith, senior, Glenn: A major talent as a receiver on the football field, Meredith signed to play baseball at Clemson during the early period. His combination of skill and speed helped him make the final 40 players for the USA Baseball 18U team.

P Bennett Nance, junior, Morehead: The left-hander is a North Carolina commit and one of the leaders in strikeouts among area pitchers. Nance is also no slouch at the plate, leading the Panthers in most offensive categories.

IF-P C.J. Neese, sophomore, Grimsley: Neese, who is already committed to N.C. State, is just one of the young, talented players who should help the Whirlies become a factor in the Metro 4-A Conference over the next few years.

SS-P Connor Norby, junior, East Forsyth: One of the top players in a loaded Piedmont Triad 4-A Conference, Norby is committed to East Carolina. He projects as a shortstop, but also is a solid pitcher at the high school level for the Eagles.

GAMES TO WATCH

Southwest Guilford at Glenn, April 7: These Piedmont Triad 4-A rivals also met March 21, with the Cowboys winning 4-0 at Southwest. Cowboys ace Kyle Blendinger vs. Glenn hitting star Kier Meredith again would be worth the price of admission.

Rockingham County at Northern Guilford, April 7: Northern won the first meeting between these Mid-State 3-A rivals 3-0 on March 18, but Rockingham County ace Angel Zarate only pitched to two batters because of shoulder tightness. Even if he doesn’t pitch, his bat will be a factor.

Farm Bureau Invitational, April 13-15, First National Bank Field: This year’s field for the annual event at the Greensboro Grasshoppers’ park includes East Montgomery, Grimsley, Page, Randleman, Rockingham County, Southeast Guilford, Wesleyan and West Forsyth.

Southwest Guilford at East Forsyth, April 21: Another key Piedmont Triad 4-A matchup. Southwest Guilford won the first meeting 3-2 on March 28 at Southwest.

Northern Guilford at Southeast Guilford, April 28: This non-conference matchup on the Falcons’ field should sharpen both teams for the NCHSAA playoffs.

High Point Christian vs. Wesleyan at Finch Field (Thomasville), May 5: Three days after these PACIS rivals meet at Ed Price Baseball Field in High Point they return to the scene of last year’s NCISAA Class 3-A championship series.
