NCHSAA PITCHING RESTRICTIONS
Rules from the N.C. High School Athletic Association regarding baseball pitchers.
Maximum pitches allowed per day: 105 (a pitcher can finish an at-bat that starts with him having thrown 104 or fewer pitches)
REQUIRED REST BETWEEN APPEARANCES
After 76 or more pitches in a day: Four calendar days
After 61-75 pitches in a day: Three calendar days
After 46-60 pitches in a day: Two calendar days
After 31-45 pitches in a day: One calendar day
Mandatory one calendar day of rest for a pitcher who appears on consecutive days, regardless of the number of pitches thrown
STATE PLAYOFFS
Regular-season rules apply except in the best-of-three state championship series, in which players can throw a maximum of 120 total pitches.
INJURY PREVENTION GUIDELINES
The American Sports Medicine Institute (asmi.org) makes the following recommendations regarding adolescent pitchers:
• Watch and respond to signs of fatigue (such as decreased pitch velocity, decreased accuracy, upright trunk during pitching, dropped elbow during pitching, or increased time between pitches). If an adolescent pitcher complains of fatigue or looks fatigued, let him rest from pitching and other throwing.
• No overhead throwing for at least two to three months per year (four months is preferred). No competitive baseball pitching for at least four months per year.
• Do not pitch more than 100 innings in games in a calendar year.
• Follow guidelines for pitch counts and rest days.
• Avoid pitching on multiple teams with overlapping seasons.
• Learn good throwing mechanics for basic throwing, fastball pitching and changeup pitching as soon as possible.
• Avoid using radar guns to monitor velocity.
• A pitcher should not also be a catcher for his team. The pitcher-catcher combination results in more throws and could increase the risk of injury.
• If a pitcher complains of pain in his throwing elbow or shoulder, discontinue pitching until evaluated by a sports medicine physician.
• Encourage adolescent pitchers to have fun playing baseball and other sports. Participation and enjoyment of physical activities will increase the player's athleticism and interest in sports.
