Maness powers Ragsdale to win over Grimsley

Where: Jamieson Stadium, Greensboro.

Records: Ragsdale 5-3, 1-0 Metro 4-A; Grimsley 2-6, 0-1.

Why the Tigers won: Ragsdale's rushing attack was too much for Grimsley, especially in the second half. Senior Malachi Maness rumbled for more than 220 yards and scored four touchdowns (should have been five), after a slow start. Maness lost three first-half fumbles, but kept the ball securely in his grasp through the second half.

Why the Whirlies lost: Grimsley looked good on offense, but couldn’t convert on fourth-and-short on a few occasions, handing the ball back to Ragsdale. Defensively, Grimsley was stout at times on the corners, but eventually was worn down by the Maness and the Tigers.

The big play: After Chris Wiggins’ second receiving touchdown, Ragsdale took over on offense suddenly only up by eight. Maness squelched any fears on the visitors' side, rushing four times for 54 yards and capping the drive with a touchdown. Judging by the body language of the Grimsley defense, the game was effectively over.

Stars: Ragsdale — Malachi Maness 28 carries, 224 yards, 4 TDs. Grimsley — LaQuan Nora 21 carries, 148 yards.
