Why the Pirates won: Page’s defense remains industrial grade, but the big-pay ability of junior receiver Cody King was a revelation for the second straight Friday. King ran for two touchdowns and caught a TD pass to spark a Pirates defense that looked sluggish for much of the opening 24 minutes.

Why the Whirlies lost: The Whirlies simply couldn’t move the ball. They were held to 47 yards and two first downs in the first half. They didn’t fare much better in the final two quarters, with five first downs and 80 yards.

The big plays: Grimsley was struggling offensively, but only trailed 7-0 late in the second quarter when Page WR Cody King took his fifth handoff of the half on a designed read play. The junior went around left end for 64 yards and a touchdown with 2:57 to play. After B.J. Turner intercepted a Whirlies pass, King took another handoff 15 yards for a TD with 1:13 left and the Pirates went to the locker room up 21-0.
