What: NCHSAA Class 3-AA East football first-round playoff game.
Where: Tommy Grayson Field, Gibsonville.
Records: Hillside 5-6; Eastern Guilford 10-2.
Why the Wildcats won: Eastern Guilford's defense bent but rarely broke, and the offensive combination of QB Dominique Graves and RB Christian McMullen was too much for Hillside.
Why the Hornets lost: Hillside's two main weapons, QB Randy Trice Jr. and RB Tyhijar Green, had to battle for every yard against the Wildcats' defense. Eastern’s defense also neutralized the Hornets' passing game.
Big plays: Eastern Guilford’s Cameron Myers bobbled the opening kickoff, then ran 70 yards to the Hillside 26-yard line. Graves finished the Wildcats’ first possession with a 1-yard touchdown run. Hillside answered with a methodical 80-yard drive, capped by a 3-yard touchdown run by Tyhijar Green. Freshman Donald Moore missed the extra point attempt, and Eastern held a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Hillside was facing fourth-and-11 from its 11-yard line. P Myles Dillon fumbled the snap and the Wildcats recovered on the 4-yard line. Graves ran it in three plays later. Graves connected with Nic Cheeley for 31 yards to start Eastern’s next possession. Six plays later, Christian McMullen ran 6 yards for the 21-6 lead.
With 28 seconds left in the first half, Hillside's Trajen Womack intercepted Graves on the Hillside 30. Eastern’s Kendyl Graves, a 300-pound offensive lineman, made a touchdown-saving tackle on the Eastern 25-yard line. The Wildcats' defense held Hillside for the last 28 seconds to preserve the 21-6 lead.
Hillside put together a sustained drive out of the locker room, moving into Wildcats territory. Eastern stopped the Hornets three times from the 2-yard line before Hillside quarterback Randy Trice Jr. ran it in. The two-point conversation failed and it was 21-12.
Key stat: Trice, Hillside’s 6-foot-2, 200-pound quarterback, had thrown for over 1,600 yards 14 touchdowns entering the game. Against Eastern Guilford, he was 5-of-18 for 55 yards
