Why the Mavericks won: Mallard Creek’s defense shut down the Page running game, and the Mavericks made the game’s one big offensive play when Knowledge Gainey took a slant pass from Korey Hailey and went 56 yards for a touchdown with 2 minutes, 52 seconds to play.
Why the Pirates lost: Two Page touchdown passes were wiped out by penalties in the fourth quarter — a 7-yard throw from Javondre Paige to Sincere Davis that was negated by a chop block and a 35-yarder from Paige to Cody King that was called back because Paige crossed the line of scrimmage before he threw.
The big play: With Mallard Creek trailing 5-3, Gainey took a slant pass from Hailey running left to right, broke a tackle, cut to the left sideline and just reached the end zone before he was brought down.
Stars: Page — QB Javondre Paige 8-of-15 passing, 79 yards; LB Alan Tisdale blocked field-goal attempt, numerous TFLs. Mallard Creek — QB Korey Hailey 6-of-12 passing, 126 yards, TD; RB Nasjzae Bryant 21 carries, 86 yards; WR Knowledge Gainey 3 catches, 106 yards, TD.
Rough finish: The final 32 seconds of the game were not played after the teams began pushing and shoving and Page was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct as Mallard Creek took a knee to run out the clock. The Pirates had no timeouts left, and the officials decided to run off the final seconds.
